Hawaii lawsuit seeks equal rights for gay couples

HONOLULU (AP)  — Six gay couples in Hawaii are filing a lawsuit Thursday asking for the same rights as married couples, three weeks after Gov. Linda Lingle vetoed a same-sex civil unions measure.

The lawsuit doesn’t seek the titles of “marriage” or “civil unions” for gay partners. Instead, it requests that the court system extend them the […]

CEO defends Minn. donations">APNewsBreak: Target CEO defends Minn. donations

By MARTIGA LOHN, Associated Press Writer

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Target Corp.‘s CEO on Tuesday defended the discount retailer’s political donations to a Minnesota group helping the state’s Republican candidate for governor, telling employees at its Minneapolis headquarters that the company’s support of the gay community is “unwavering.”

Chief Executive Gregg Steinhafel said gay employees have been raising concerns about the money helping state Rep. Tom Emmer, who opposes gay marriage. Target gave $150,000 to MN Forward, a group staffed by former insiders from outgoing Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s administration. MN Forward is running TV ads supporting Emmer.

We rarely endorse all advocated positions of the organizations or candidates we support, and we do not have a political or social agenda,” Steinhafel said in an e-mail.

He added: “Let me be very clear, Target’s support of the GLBT community is unwavering, and inclusiveness remains a core value of our company.”

Judge blocks Arizona law on domestic-partner benefits

A federal judge is blocking Arizona from implementing a state law that eliminates domestic partner benefits for gay and lesbian state employees. U.S. District Judge John Sedwick on Friday issued a preliminary injunction that requires the state to still make family health insurance available to gay and lesbian state employees who have established relationships that meet standards set under state administration rules. “The Kids Are All Right”: The gay-marriage movie America needs">The Kids Are All Right”: The gay-marriage movie America needs

Filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko can only hope that her lesbian-marriage comedy “The Kids Are All Right” can attract the degree of attention and animosity from the family-values right that it has already attracted from certain quarters of the lesbian and gay community. When I wrote two pieces about the film from Sundance in January, the feedback […]

In one challenge brought by the state of Massachusetts, Judge Joseph Tauro ruled that Congress violated the Tenth […]

PM weds as gay marriage legalised">Iceland PM weds as gay marriage legalised

Miss Sigurdardottir, 68, formally married Jonina Leosdottir, a writer, after the couple submitted a demand for their civil union to be transformed into a marriage, the RUV broadcaster said.

Iceland’s parliament on June 12 unanimously adopted legislation allowing gay marriage, in a law that came into force on Sunday.

Prop. 8 backers: Marriage promotes procreation

Winding up a historic trial over same-sex marriage in California, the lawyer for Proposition 8’s sponsors told a federal judge Wednesday that allowing only a man and a woman to wed promotes responsible sex and child rearing, and ultimately ensures the future of humanity.

During more than two hours of intense and sometimes skeptical questioning by Chief […]
